One group of people whom I hate the most in Trivandrum are autorickshaw drivers. I have never seen such kind of rude people anywhere else in Kerala. As a person who travels frequently in autos (everyday, to and from office), I have had many bad encounters with them. But yesterday it was a little bit surprising. I called an autorickshaw from Jagathy junction in the morning and there was total traffic chaos since there was no policeman present at that time. Then the driver began talking. And I listened with much interest. He talked about how he is being alienated amongst the other auto drivers.
"The other auto drivers say I'm different. Perhaps I am. They accuse me of trying to be different. I follow the traffic signals everywhere which the others don't care about even a bit. I used to work in a Gulf country and returned an year ago. The traffic rules out there is very strict and people are made to pay a fine if they ignored the signals. Here our laws are very loose and nobody cares. I also don't charge anyone other than the regular charge and do not confuse people who are new to city with taking them on long rides and charge them high."
I looked at him and I could spot an old gold plated Rado watch on his wrist which used to symbolize every Gulf-returned person in Kerala. He must be in his 40's and was well groomed and neatly dressed. He spoke Malayalam in pucca Trivandrum accent, but used print media language in between.
"Did you understand what I just said?"
"Yes, I did." I smiled.
"Many people these days do not understand good Malayalam, you know. They say they know very little Malayalam and are proud to say that. I was shocked to see this after coming back to the country."
"You know," He continued to speak, "I used to work with an MNC out there in Gulf. I can speak 7 languages! English, Hindi, Tamil, Arabic etc etc. And when I speak Malayalam, I speak in good Malayalam. Isn't that how it should be?"
"You are right about that."
Then we reached my office and I was wondering if he was just playing all this to ask for more than what I have to pay. But he was not. He asked for the regular charge and we told each other "it's a pleasure meeting you." He made my morning good.
PS: In the evening on the very same day, I called an auto and he asked for more than what I have to pay. I said I wouldn't pay a penny more. Then he said in a threatening voice, "Do as I say"!!! I was really angry and I gave him what I really owed him and just turned back. I could hear him on the back showering me with all the words that you wouldn't find in shabda thaaraavali.

Hi, I wanted to refer to your blog in my blog which I am writing about “How blogging, Online visibility is going to help Outsourcing and create more business.” I understand that the question would be why your Blog as it is totally disparate and yes that is the reason I wanted to highlight that there are enough individuals who have a passion of sharing online and Blogs can be channelized for professional growth and not just personal networking or as a personal channel. I would post my blog under an interesting competition going on with a chance to win $1000 (http://www.limeexchange.com/contest/details/2). Is it going to be alright with you?
Fine with me. It will be great if you can share the link after you post it.
i think it is not only Trivandrum, but all cities i've lived except Calicut has got these kind of rude auto drivers. I still believe the autowaalas in Blore are the worst.
True, heard a lot about autowallahs in Bangalore. :-)
Interesting entry :-)
As someone who was a frequent autorickshaw user in Trivandrum for years, I fully empathize with you!
:-)
I prefer to stay away from Auto when I travel in Trivandrum. Even if I have to walk for a long time, I
will do that. It is not just the extra money, it is their rude behavior and bad attitude. Things are
better in Cochin and best in Calicut. I remember traveling in an auto in Calicut 4 or 5 yrs back. The
meter was going like mutiples of 20 paise and it came like 6 Rupees 80 paise. I gave him 10 Rupees note
and he gave me exact balance ! I mean 3 Rupees and 20 paise !! I was really surprised and impressed. To
add it more, it was very early morning and I was expecting them to take the so called 'double charge'
but the guy took what was shown in the meter.
Any trivandrum auto drivers listening ? lol, go to Calicut once in a while and take a crash course on behavior ;)
Joe, I forgot to mention.
When you get into an auto somewhere near Technopark = you are a rich software engineer who is earning a lot of $$$$$ ;) lol
So naturally they will ask for more !
I heard a lot of good stories about auto drivers in Calicut. I can only wish if the autowallahs here learn from them. :-)
Jo, I don't think you've ever been to Chennai...am wondering what you'd say about Chennai autowallahs..man, trust me, if you ever did that, am sure you'll freak out even if you simply hear the word "auto"!!! :-D
:-)
Looks like every capital/metro town has such fellows around!
Hi Jo
That was a good post. I also commute by auto everyday. I'm in Bangalore. I had been in Chennai for many years. Have also been to Trivandrum. According to me Chennai is the place which has the worst auto drivers. Next is Bangalore and was surprised to see your posting about Trivandrum autodrivers. Had an impression that Kerala had the good auto drivers who dont demand more. Well as you said every place has this kind of people. As long as we are ready to pay, they fleece us to the core.
Thanks Priya. What you said is true. I think compared to the metros, they charge less here, but still more than the usual. Perhaps as one city grows these things also grow up.
I think, the behaviour and attitude matters more than money. I think the auto drivers in kannur is best, in kerala. I still remember, when I am in kannur for the first time for an interview, an auto driver, show me two places for accomodation, and waited until,we got a room to stay, and still charged, the meter charge only. But in calicut, I had a bitter experience, a driver dropped me at a place, which was 100 mtr away from the source by making 2 rounds around the mananjira sqare
you are absolutely right about the auto drivers in trivandrum.. ive had similar experiences. they woudnt shut up till they get what they want. i am just surprised that all people succumb to their demants. we should never give them a paisa more than the amount owed.
The other day i was driving my new car...along the 2 lane track...on my track . suddenly an auto just turned into my lane and scraped the side of my car...and he started shouting swearing at me as though it was his fault ... i hope police or someone soon comes up with some arrangement to teach these thara auto drivers a lesson they will never forget....
If they overcharge, the police have stated that you need to note down the auto number and call 1090 and register your complaint. The excess amt. will be returned.
