A predictable story line. A sloppy script. A sluggish movie. That is what Calcutta News for you. Even Meera Jasmine could not save this film and the only saving factors are the cinematography of S Kumar and the music by Deb Jyoti Mishra. The only scene that stays in my mind after leaving the theater was the song sequence of "Engu Ninnu Vanna". This movie seemed to me as a Vinayan movie than a Blessy movie as Blessy is trying to cash-in using the over sentimental scenes and still fails miserably.
Music - Recommended
...and mainly for K S Chitra and Deb Jyoti Mishra. Blessy has roped in the Bengali music director Deb Jyoti Mishra (Who is a protégé of the maestro Salil Chowdhury) for this movie and music is the major highlight of the film as Blessy had admitted in an interview with The Hindu. And it has the signature of a great singer all over it whom we often forget to mention, the most gifted female singer of our times - K S Chitra.
Each song in this music album sung by Chitra shows her versatility. It is quite surprising that media and her listeners alike have not properly recognized her contribution towards the music industry in India. She has sung in a variety of Indian languages and been here for a long time. Chitra deserves an equal space with Lata Mangeshkar and she should be entitled to be the Nightingale of India (not just 'South India'). But Chitra had never played politics and always remained silent except for singing, so that must have sidelined this great singer from getting the proper recognition that she deserves. Nevertheless, she has a special place in every music listener's heart.Engu Ninnu Vanna is the most beautiful song that I have heard in the recent times. A melodious duet, beautifully rendered by Chitra and Madhu Balakrishnan. Listen to Chitra's solo version of the same song and you will be amazed to note how effortlessly she sings. She puts on the right emotion in the right place and uses manOdhaRmam at ease. A must listen. Highly recommended.
Nanmayaakunna Kaanthi is a beautiful prayer song and it has simple yet beautiful and meaningful lyrics. Kudos to Vayalar Sarathchandra Varma for penning such a beautiful song. Again, Chitra's voice is a plus point here too. Kani Kanduvo is another beautiful song with K S Chitra singnature. Kannadi Koottile is a peppy number which is, again, safe in Chitra's voice.
The album has a Bengali song sung by Srikanth Acharya who is a famous singer in the Bengali music industry (My cover version of Srikanth Acharya's Amaar Sharaatha Din can be heard from here). This is the title song of the movie.
Overall, this movie is barely watchable, but the music is highly recommended.
