Ore Kadal:
(Listen to the songs online here - Music India Online)

One of the highlights of this album is that all five songs in this movie are composed in one raaga - Subha panthuvaraaLi. Music director Ouseppachan who has given some musical gems in Malayalam music has dared to do a different experiment with this album. Even though all songs are based on the same raaga, each song stands out with its own features. There are some fresh new voices along with some already known voices in Malayalam. The lyricist Gireesh Puthenchery has done a great job with lyrics to include love and it's pain.

Songs:

pRaNaya sandhyayoru - Bombay Jayashree

Bombay Jayashree says this is the best song she has sung in recent times. A beautiful song with a haunting melody, orchestration and a wonderful rendition.

“The best song I have sung in recent times,” says Jayashri. “The song ‘Pranaya Sandhyayoru Vin Sooryan’ is a poignant melody. It haunted me for days. I even cancelled some of my engagements while recording to remain immersed in the mood of the raga.”
yamuna veRuthE - Sung by Swetha
oru KaTalaay - Naveen Nair

Fresh new voices with beautiful and emotive renditions. Must listen.

nagaram - Vineeth Sreenivasan

This is perhaps the best song that Vineeth has got to the date. and he has done a very good job on this.

manassinte - Venugopal, Sujatha

Sujatha's rendition is the best part of this song while Venugopal's voice don't seem to excite us somehow compared to other singers in this album.

Overall, this music album has set a new standard in Malayalam music and I am all praise for Ouseppachan for this wonderful work. I think last time it was Bombay Ravi who took the challenge of composing three songs in the same raaga (mOhanam raaga) for the movie Nakhakshathangal.

Awesome recommendations Jo. Ore Kadal was a revelation and a major contributing factor has been its music.
All the songs are top class, and for me 'Oru Kadalay' stands out for its hindustani touches and innovative rendering by Navin Nair. I heard a nice story behind Navin being selected to sing this song. It seems Ouseppachan was setting the tune for the song, and Naveen who is the flutist in Ouseppachans troop was involved with the group while singing it together. Ouseppachan caught the different sound, and innovative style of his and recommended him to Syamaprasad - Listening to the song will make you adore the new comer for his bold approach. Yamuna veruthe by Shwetha (sujatha's daughter, rite?) and Pranayasandhya are both rendered from the depths of the heart. All in all, one of the best albums that came out since...well...cant think. (maybe vadakkum nathan was the last one worth hearing completely?)
    Awesome review!

    >> Abhi: Thanks much for your comments. So Navin was a flutist in Ouseppachan's troupe? That guy is very much talented of course. The song that first kept running in my ipod for days was Pranaya Sandhya and then Oru Kadalaay and then Yamuna Veruthe.

And yeah, I guess Vadakkumnathan was the last best musical feast we had eventhough there were some fresh new sounds like Aanachandam by Jaison J Nair.
