One thing that the directors in Malayalam movie industry complain about is the lack of good story material. It has been their prime excuse for their churning out of crap movies. On the other hand the Malayalee audience keep complaining about the crap movies and the very same set of people ignore good movies as "award padam". It's really very funny to see this.
Shyamaprasad is a wonderful film maker compared to all those where-is-the-story yelling types. He has caught my attention right from the days of his tele-films such as Peruvazhiyile Kariyilakal and Uyirthezhunnelppu. As a well read person himself, he knows how to craft a beautiful movie out of a good story. And Shyam has never ever disappointed since the beginning of his career as a film maker. Ore Kadal, his latest, is just another wonderful movie from him.
Let's have a look at his movies -
Peruvazhiyile Kariyilakal (Tele film) - Based on the short story in the same name by N. Mohanan (son of Lalithambika Antharjanam, whose novel was made into a film - Agnisakshi - by Shyam later)
Uyirthezhunnelppu (Tele film) - Based on a short story by Marquez (or is it Anton Chekov's?). Kukku Parameshwaran, who does the costume design of Shyam's movies now, had given an amazing performance in this one.
Agnisakshi - Adaptation of the same novel by Lalithambika Antharjanam
Kallu Kondoru Pennu - Based on S L Puram Sadanandan’s popular play in the same name
Bokshu the Myth - Adaptation of Ganga Prasad Vimal’s Hindi novel Mrigantak
Akale - Adaptation of The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams
Ore Kadal - Adaptation of Sunil Gangopadhya's Heerak Deepthi
In an interview when he was asked why he is not writing his own stories and heavily relies on adaptations, he said:
I am not a writer. I prefer to adapt well-known literary works of noted writers for my television and cinema productions, so that the viewers too get a chance to explore the literary works from the perspective of the visual media. It is not at all an easy task to do the movie adaptations of the literary works. Another good thing that this adaptations do is it makes the audience read the original work. I went on to read some books only after watching its movie adaptations (ex: Godfather, Message in a Bottle, Bridges of Maddison County etc).
Are other story-hunting directors who blame it all on the new age writers listening??
The movie Ore Kadal is about a relationship between a renowned economist and a housewife. The story of love and lust which has been given life by two of the finest actors in Indian cinema in the lead role, Mammootty and Meera Jasmine, with brilliant supportive performances by Narain and Ramya Krishnan, is so beautiful. Meera Jasmine has become one gem of an actor and you can see how naturally she fits into a role and delivers it to perfection. What the heck if she dances around or being glamorous in Tamil and Telugu movies, I am happy to see that she is being picky in Malayalam and gives us some memorable performances.
Mammootty has given a subtle, yet a very good performance in this movie. I do not understand why some of the die-hard Mohan Lal fans and some actors like Jagathy Sreekumar keeps questioning on Mammotty's versatility. If there is one actor to be called versatile in Malayalam, I would say, it is Mammootty. He keeps challenging himself with varied roles and he succeeds in it. Nobody could thought of him doing a comic role, but he succeeded in it through a masala entertainer Raja Manikkyam. He did a villaneous role in Vidheyan while he was portrayed in an extremely opposite role in Ponthan Maada. He used to be hesitant of doing intimate scenes in the movies, but here in this movie you can see that he has gotten rid of that too.
To those who complain that Malayalam cinema is not doing good enough like in the old times, I would ask them to take a look little deeper and begin to appreciate the good movies which is usually called as "Award Cinema" or Parallel Cinema. Compared to the old days, the narrative and the filming of these movies have changed a lot to accommodate the change of times. If you are not watching it, and if you keep feeding the Antony Perumpavoors with your money and time, you have no rights to complain about the mainstream packs of junk.

Velu's movie review

Nice profiling of Shayama Prasad's career. And excellent review of the movie. You should more reviews...
Happy Onam Jo.
A very good film indeed. I was disturbed with the youngsters in the audience, who kept on making lewd comments throughout the film (A family with 2 teenaged girls left the theatre even before the interval because of this).
And, I also agree with you on Mammooka's versatility. I don't remember him repeating himself (feel like laughing at people who feel he is stiff).
Very good write-up friend. I second Alexis view that you'd write more film reviews
Thank you Alexis. I'm not a professional reviewer and don't know how to do it but will definitely post my own thoughts here. :-)
Gattu, thank you for the visit. There is news that the movie is about relationships and some people expected some explicit scenes in the movie I guess. Also there were lots of "fans" in the movie hall (of both Meera and Mammootty) who probably dont care about "cinema" but actors.
Jo
That very last line in ur post, delivers the knock-out punch. Bravo!
the review was ok...but the comment about mammooty could have been another post rather...it seems you spoke abt the frustration of accusing mammoooty....
Happy Onam Jo. Hope you had a great time. Ya I'm planning to watch Ore Kadal and I guess your review would help. But I beg to differ on the "versatility" part. Agreed Mammootty is one of the finest actors in Indian cinema. No doubt about that. And he is a methodical actor. If you see his evolution as an actor, that is something amazing. He has improved by leaps and bounds through out his career. I still wouldn't consider him as the most versatile actor because he still appears laboured in some roles. Mammootty is at his best when portraying serious, emotionally charged roles which has plenty of melodramatic hues and tones. May be he's the most intelligent actor around as it is evident from the way he picks his characters. May be is he is versatile in picking but not essaying the roles. :)
Meanwhile I'd like to see "Raja manikyam" as a flash in the pan and still believe that film ran becaue of the so called "Trivandrum dialect' and the comedy felt made up.
Well lemme see the movie :)))
Belated Onam wishes to you too! Yes, I had a great time during this year's Onam with family and friends.
Mammotty might seem laboured in some roles like you mentioned. Infact, I nearly omitted seeing him as Tharadas, in Balram Vs. Tharadas and left theatre in the interval time. Thuruppu Gulan was another torturing movie. Comedy is not always something that he can do with ease, but I think he has broken the image of "Mammootty cannot do comedy" with Rajamanikyam. But when he did Thuruppugulan with the confidence from Manikyam, it felt odd. But I have felt the same way about Mohan Lal too in the recent times. But he seems to have returned to his old charm in his latest hit Hallo.
Another example of Mammooty doing comedy is Danny. Danny, from my point of view, has a dark humor and T V Chandran and Mammooty have done a very good job on this. One example to take on this from Hollywood would be Jack Nicholson. Nicholson shines in serious melodramic roles (and he is a methodical actor as you mentioned) but his way of doing comedy in As Good As It Gets is brilliant (which also fetched him an Oscar for best actor). But the definitions of comedy in the movies like Danny and As Good As It Gets is different from what our comedians like Jagathy do. Its just different types of humor, I believe.
I am not saying Mammooty is the 'most' versatile actor, but I believe he 'is' a versatile actor by picking up challenging roles and I believe he has succeeded in those challenges (I'm not totally referring to his commercial junks though).
About Ore Kadal, there are some scenes that I found so predictable. For example, the scene where Meera comes before him to say that she is pregnant and he doesn't recognize that its his child (while he knew he had un-protected sex with her earlier). Other wise, nice movie, and nice music. :-)
its an amazing movie congrats to all artists in front and behind the screen
Jo,
Great review man! Keep it up.
With regards to the pregnancy, since she's a married woman, the child does not necessarily be Nathan's. And I liked the scene where he said.. "Are you pregnant?.. Oh! yeah.. you are pregnant.."
Mamooty is a very good actor....but u see..the variety of films mohanlal has acted and got 2 act in 80s and early 90s in unmatchable for any actor..his versatility is a way above anyone..but mamooty is really another gem....But lal is way above in versatility..and btw rajamanikyam is a substandard comedy...and the comedies lal has acted in 80s and 90s are class comedies...and dats da difference..and basically...its not right 2 compare these two actors../

ore kadal is a crap movie!!
Shyamaprasad is running away from concluding the film where he left the cetral theme open to the audience.
While dealing with sensitive topics like extra-marital relationships , he should show courage to tell what is the stand he has on the charaters, rather than putting it like in Adoor/Aravindan movies.
This is movie may get awards, but make fool of audience who pays for tickets and watch the movie
Peruvazhiyile.. was a superb short. But I found uyirthezhunelpu to be mediocre. Agnisakshi as well (given the fact that it had a strong story available). Once I watched an interview with Shyamaprasad on television, and he was so pretentious! though it was a malayalam program, he was answering the questions in English!
A worthwhile thing he has done is being the honcho of Amrita TV. They have (rather had, havent watched it in recent times) some good productions.
I caught this movie by accident on a channel called Lok Sabha. I did not want to change the channel till the end - it was gripping. True there are some snags, but the desire to know what happens next was strong.
Excellent performances by Meera Jasmine and Mammootty. There is no doubt that Mammootty is one of the best, the most versatile actor we have. He lived the role of Dr. Ambedkar (got the National Award for this), and his contradictory roles in Videyan and Ponthan Maada, stand out - he won the National Award that year (1994) for both films. I enjoyed his performance in Rajamanickam.
Nice review.
Mammooty and Versatile? You got to be kidding me! He can not carry off 90% of roles that Mohanlal does. I think he is a very shallow actor. The review was also pretty vague. Could have done better.
