There are protests happening all over India against Bush's visit to India.

Arundhati Roy writes in The Nation:

Since the Purana Qila also houses the Delhi zoo, George Bush's audience will be a few hundred caged animals and an approved list of caged human beings, who in India go under the category of "eminent persons." They're mostly rich folk who live in our poor country like captive animals, incarcerated by their own wealth, locked and barred in their gilded cages, protecting themselves from the threat of the vulgar and unruly multitudes whom they have systematically dispossessed over the centuries.

Oh, and on March 2, Bush will be taken to visit Gandhi's memorial in Rajghat. He's by no means the only war criminal who has been invited by the Indian government to lay flowers at Rajghat. (Only recently we had the Burmese dictator General Than Shwe, no shrinking violet himself.) But when Bush places flowers on that famous slab of highly polished stone, millions of Indians will wince. It will be as though he has poured a pint of blood on the memory of Gandhi.

We really would prefer that he didn't.

It is not in our power to stop Bush's visit. It is in our power to protest it, and we will. The government, the police and the corporate press will do everything they can to minimize the extent of our outrage. Nothing the happy newspapers say can change the fact that all over India, from the biggest cities to the smallest villages, in public places and private homes, George W. Bush, the President of the United States of America, world nightmare incarnate, is just not welcome.
I think from the government's part, it is alright to welcome the bush visit since (unfortunately) he represent his country. But we have the rights to protest to show him we, the people in India, do not support this killer. Often the protests against bush was taken as the protest against USA. NO, it is not a protest against the people in that county but its killer presidents like Bill Clinton or George W. Bush. Most of my american friends see Bush's rule as a shame to their country.

We do not know in which all areas our UPA government is going to surrender before him. I'm sure there will be some compromise in our nuclear policies. Perhaps by the strong protest of the left parties, they may go one step behind from surrendering everything before the big brother. Let's wait and see.

There is an organization called "Bothini" in my town, which was started by just one person and the rumour is that it grows in the support of RSS. Their posters in town say "Bush's visit is for development". At first, I was surprised and then I thought there is no need for surprise since what Bush does in USA with the support of a few Christian extremist groups is the same being done here by RSS/BJP folks.

Although...most of ur arguements are rite, in a recent survey, our country men have voted saying we like US the most. I think rite now, we need economic development, for which we need the US as a partner, for a larger cause of our people, I beleive we can ignore the rest, atleast for the time being. :)

We can tell bush as a killer president, but we like to sign agreement with a developed country. Our Prime minister said yesterday, that India will not compromise on nuclear policies. I think after bush visit the UPA government will face a head pain form The Left.
Jo I have also written about Bush visit India on my blog.

"There are ignorant lots in every country, thats how Bush was elected again in USA. :-)"

What does this mean...?? Bush might not be the ideal president..
    can u substantiate this statement?

If the same arguement applies in India, it wud be disastrous.

@Vijay -- I meant, in USA, there are some people who do not care about the evil acts of Bush and thats how he got elected.

  6. Vijay Ramamurthi // 9:41 PM, March 01, 2006

That is exactly what I am trying to clear, they dont consider it as evil acts. Thats the differnce, not that they dont care...!!!
Our nieghbouring countries think we occupying kashmir is an evil act, its the same thing. People have diff priorities/view points. We have to accept them and move on. Otherwise totally shun US, which we cant !!!!! so technically we are also protraying huge quanties of hyprocracy rite. Dont u think so??

@Vijay -- The whole Americans do not think that way. Atleast a few think in the other way. As you live in the US, perhaps you have seen these protests going on over there at times.

We are not occupying Kashmir. And it cannot be compared to what Bush does to the world. Not all of our neighboring countries think Kashmir issue is an evil act from our side. It is only Pakistan (as I understood so far).

We cannot totally shun US and they cannot totally deny us too. Suppose the US president himself wants to close the whole deals with India would the corporate giants in America say yes? I don't think so. Because they have a wide market here and also they can get things done for cheaper from here. Softdrink giants like Coke and Pepsi which plays an important role in American economy wouldnt let their govt close their doors to this large market called India.

I agree, majority voted him back..thats the key point.

"We are not occupying Kashmir. And it cannot be compared to what Bush does to the world. "
    I agree
but it just the way we think, unfortunately lot of others dont think that way..[read as referrendum, we havent conducted one rite??, why? its diff issue :)]

Good, u have the economics parts rite..IMO lets just look to our advantage rite now, coz we have too many killers in our back yard, we shudnt be wasting our time in such things.

So, why the hell you need US funds ,and why the fuck Indians flock to US. Just stay in your village and travel backwards to stone age..

    Grow up,Protesters..

  10. Jo // 10:48 AM, March 03, 2006

@Vijay -- :-) That is okay. But still if people want to protest, let them. The protestors have their own reasons, so let them be. (I didn't mean the commies or some of the Muslim groups). It is in our right to protest.

@PityYou -- Whoa!!! Are you an American or Indian born American desi? I am earning dollars with my talent and expertise. It is not a charity fund am getting from there. And if you didn't know already, am working from my home and earn US dollars from there for my work. But why am I wrong when I talk against Bush while your own countrymen do not like him? And personally I do not have anything against the people in USA. So I pity you!!!
